I would like to know what is involved in developing and implementing a "beautification plan" for a soon-to-be detention pond in Parcel #9 (of the City's Comprehensive Plan) to the east of highway 287 and north of Baseline Road. The detention pond will handle runoff from the pending Walmart Superstore pavement, and it will be right behind my back yard. My neighbors and I are concerned about all of a sudden finding ourselves living adjacent to an industrial drainage ditch, and we'd like to minimize the impact of that experience. We anticipate that a few judiciously placed trees and other landscaping could produce the very pleasant effect of living next to park-like open space, rather than the very unpleasant effect of an industrial looking Walmart drainage ditch. Can you give us some idea how large a budget is required to plan for and implement beautification of the detention pond and what we can do to help identify resources or otherwise help the process along? We understand that Lafayette budgets are tight now, but the fact is that the rest of the detention areas coming to the 80 acres about to be developed are being planned by the developer to have interesting landscaping, and the city-owned Walmart detention area will stand in stark contrast if it is not similarly landscaped. Sincerely, -Joe Werne (518 Arbor Drive, 303-661-0891)
